Notes here with information from:
Dirk van Miert, author of:
The Emancipation of Biblical Philology in the Dutch Republic, 1590-1670, Oxford 2018
Book is up to 1670, so not with Haak, Wittichius, Trigland, Nolet
States Translation
Grotius
Joseph Scaliger, Franciscus Gomarus, Daniel Heinsius, Claudius Salmasius, Isaac Vossius... not all of these wrote about the CJ,
Gomarus was also an extremely capable philologist.
My main warning in the book is that philology was not the prerequisite of Arminians or liberal thinkers or radical philosophers -
The States Translators, Gomarus, Grotius, Spinoza: they all used philology to back up their own theological and philosophical positions.
Jonathan Israel says:
Spinoza was a game changer, he did not invent biblical philology - he wasn't even very good at it (see Anthony Grafton, Piet Steenbakkers, etc.).
MOVE TO 1700s
Christopher Wittichius (German-born Dutch)
