In this specimen progress is seen in the extreme contrast of heavy and light strokes; and the general aspect of the writing is one of excessive
artificiality. This heavy class of Greek writing has received the name of 'Slavonic' having been accepted as a pattern for the alphabets of
Eastern Europe.
The same style continues still later. Of the middle of the tenth century is the only extant uncial MS. of the Greek New Testament (with one possible exception) which has a precise date. This is a copy of the Gospels of A. D. 949, in the Vatican Library (MS. Graec. 354; New: Pal.
Soc. 105).
