Stauros I. Voutyras 1841-1923 is the Greek author or publisher of the lexicon:

So Voutyras is the editor or publisher with the author (or information from) Dimosthenis Chaviaras, for the 4-page article on Simonides, with a list of publications that is largely based on Periplus of Hennon 1864.

Anna also gives the background of Chaviaras when discussing the birth of Simonides on p. 88 of the PDF referenced above.

notes on Lilia's bibliography

One of the very interesting notes is from the chronology:

1853 Kallinikos.jpg

The monk Kallinikos writes the biographical sketch of Simonides in Moscow and publishes Simonides' Αρχαιολογικόν σπουδαιοδρόμιον (Archaeological Relics) dedicated to Alexander Sturtza.

Canfora 2012 is Canfora, Luciano (2012), Constantinos Simonides: Opere greche I, Bari

(note, there are two Canfora 2012, have to confirm which one, either wat we now have those pages)

=================

Is this a back-dated writing from Simonides?
Or is this an important evidence largely overlooked?

=================

Alexandru Sturdza (Александр Скарлатович Стурдза; Iași, Moldavia, 18 November 1791 – Odessa, 13 June 1854) was a Russian publicist and diplomat of Romanian origin. In his writings, he referred to himself with a French rendition of his name, Alexandre Stourdza.

Biographische Skizze.

entwickelte.

Biographical sketch.

It should not be uninteresting if we include a biographical to give a sketch of our adventurous compatriot Looking for. Our main source on this is Simonides himself; this has the advantage of immediacy, but also the disadvantage that we there remain in the dark where Simonides the veil of mystery loved Konstantin Simonides was supposedly born on Hydra; his But mother was from Symi (near Rhodes, the mainland opposite Carien), and this island is probably also known as the true father land of Simonides to look at. His father came from, as he gave, from Stagira; but he probably wanted to relation to the birthplace of Aristotle his own spiritual kinship with the great philosopher. His first secret Stative education received Simonides in the educational institution, which the immortalized Kapodistrias on the island of Aigina, and on which among others the famous teachers Dukas and Constantas ten. Since this institution shortly after the death of Kapodistrias 1831, and Simonides, when he left her, at least 12 years had to be old, so it can be concluded from this that the same is currently several years older than 33 years, what age is he attributes to himself and could also confirm his appearance. Russian1 monastery was. This Benedictos left in Athens worthy men the reputation of a respectable and very taught man. It would mean insulting his memory if you wanted to in the slightest pretend that he has deceitful tendencies been beneficial to his nephew. But it is very probable lich that the blessed Bcncdictos predilection for old Greek hand- writings and his deep study of the same to Simonides provided the means for his own dishonest studies. Because not only are in this monastery of Athos as well as in all others many old manuscripts, but Simonides likes from also received many orders from his uncle to make copies, whereby the natural talent of the same for imitation and replicating the characters of ancient manuscripts more and more developed.

of the past on the other hand, according to the scheme that whoever owns the past also owns the present. In such a time energy often replaces morality. In the manner of the forger, like a lost artist, Simonides was trying to fill the huge gap between Greek antiquity and the emerging new Greek nation. In 1848 he had published the work "Symais", in which, among many other things, he claimed that in his hometown of Symi the long but non-existent Peristratos of Rhodes had invented an early form of typography. As in his previous essay, he claimed that someone, also non-existent, Panselinos had developed heliography, just so that the French would not have the lead in the discovery of photography! Infant nations, games with chimeras, sympathetic fancies. "Simonides", Saper told us, "served the cause of the rebirth of a nation with a great past and a difficult present. In essence, the Greeks had to invent themselves from the beginning and they did so through ancient culture and texts, but and with the help of the English and the Germans. Simonides took part as an artist in this rediscovery. Let's not forget that the Germans are also a late nation that discovered itself from the beginning and defined its mark through a series of ancient Germanic myths'. After the restoration of the general framework, there remains only an interpretation of the hero's inclination towards fraud. And of course an explanation for the attempted murder of his father and stepmother with arsenic when he was only 12 or 13 years old. Saper senses some childhood trauma that could explain all of Simonides' later psyche and turns his attention to "Uncle" Benedict's regular visits to Constantine's paternal home. Benedict was otherwise a holy man, a friend of the family, who later took Constantine with him to Mount Athos. But did Benedictus enter the boy's room at night with unheard demands? "There is a big problem in Simonides' biography, there is no evidence of sexuality in his private life," says Saper. "She wasn't married, there are indications that she had a penchant for men, but of course we are in the 19th century and we are talking about terrible taboos. With the freedom afforded by sympathy for the hero I have tried to show that here we may have a case of sexual abuse, it is a plausible work case". Simonides' forgeries are still being sold at auctions today

"I am someone else" The Forger's Odyssey is the first biography of this ghost. In 2011 my book was published in Germany, in 2012 the Greek edition followed and a few weeks ago the Italian one. The beginning and the end remain an enigma. Was he born in 1820 in Hydra or in 1824 in Symi? Did he die in 1874 in Alexandria, the city of Constantine Cavafy, or in 1890 in northern Greece? It is certain that in 1848 he appeared in Athens, the capital of the newly established Greek state. He indulges in bold philological and publishing ventures, plays the role of the patriot, the active scientist who discovers Greek treasures. He wants to give an identity to his country, which is being built by friendly forces of the North. So he writes "Symaida", a book full of technological and philosophical surprises. If Simonides is to be believed (and then everyone wanted to believe him), steamships and telescopes have existed since late antiquity. Utopias, as in the novels of Jules Verne. Simonides was the greatest forger of the 19th century. His motivations, his personas: the Greek, the man of the Church, the scout, the historian, the charismatic copyist. We can learn a lot from his life. The crooks born in the poor South of Europe are welcome in the rich North. Simonides wanders as an exotic artist in the metropolises: Istanbul, Paris, London, Leipzig; there he is arrested. "I am someone else," said Arthur Rimbaud, the French poet. The question of identity constantly preoccupies the literature of the 20th century. Simonides produces and offers not stories, but History. It trades the raw material from which the world we still live in today was created - Europe. Our continent was shaped from the beginning by fantasies. In any case, they are inevitable. The Greek theatrical masks of antiquity did not hide anything, in fact they served to emphasize and clarify. The mask attracts attention. Simonides has fascinated me for a long time. His life shows us that not only the past stands on fragile foundations, but also what we call the present; without a doubt, the future as well. What we are hopefully experiencing as a transition, the crisis, was his destiny. It armed him with unimaginable imagination, audacity and free will. * Ridiger Saper (born 1959) is the editor-in-chief of the culture section of the Berlin newspaper "Tagespiegel", for which he has worked since 1999. Before that, he was the correspondent of the newspaper "Suddeutsche Zeitung" in Berlin for a decade. Nefeli p. 259 How the 19th century manuscript forger Konstantinos Simonides sold or gave away supposed manuscripts of Greek authors that he had copied and papyri of completely non-existent authors that he had invented himself

Not much has been written in Greek about the demonic and vicious forger of manuscripts of the 19th century, Konstantinos Simonides, only a few and conclusive ones, as if we are somewhat ashamed of this imaginative forger of the nation's intellectual history. We know that he was born in Symi in 1820, that he studied the art of manuscripts on Mount Athos, that he provoked controversies among important scholars of his time by sometimes selling and sometimes giving away in France, England and Germany supposed manuscripts of Greek authors that he had copied or papyri of completely non-existent authors he had invented himself. He had even clashed with the famous German theologian and Bible critic Constantine Tischendorf. Only one photograph of him survives, a thin figure with a thin face, intense gaze and abundant tousled hair, an enigmatic ghost of the 19th century. And in the relevant entry of a large Greek encyclopedia, a retrospective condemnation: "From a young age he showed signs of his propensity towards perversion, after he tried to kill his parents". The partial restoration of Simonides was undertaken by the German journalist and theater critic Rüdiger Saper, a lover of Greece and a friend of Mount Athos. Simonides' biography, The Forger's Odyssey, has been released these days, and it exudes an understated sympathy for the dark hero. He describes him as a child of the liberation struggle of the Greeks who was possessed by the thirst to give his young nation a spiritual existence. Even by dubious means. "For me it's a matter of internal justice," the author told us. "And Professor Tischendorf made his lobbies to get his hands on and make use of the Sinaitic Codex, the oldest manuscript of the Holy Bible. Simply on the scales his honest side is a little heavier, while Simonides's is a little lighter. Coincidence and injustice play a big role in those who are judged worthy and those who are ultimately deemed unworthy of the deltas of History. I am attempting a fairer and a little more exciting redistribution of these roles'. The entire era in which Simonides lived and acted was fascinating. Mythomaniac and megalomaniac was not only himself, but the entire 19th century with its unprecedented impetuosity, with its relentless conquest of the inner and outer world. Industrialization and colonialism on the one hand, surveying the past on the other, according to the scheme that whoever owns the

past also owns the present. In such a time energy often replaces morality.

well-known Italian Hellenist Luciano Canfora considered a copy The real work of Constantinos Simonides involved the copying of manuscripts with passion and perfectionism. To his prospective clients he always presented a pack of mixed manuscripts, genuine and forgeries. Even today, his "works" occasionally appear at auctions. But the difference between the original and the copy should be seen in the context of his time. "The concepts of "original" and "copy", as we understand them today, they are relatively new", says Saper, "they were formed at the time when Simonides lived. From Antiquity to the 19th century there was a liberating engagement with ancient texts and sources, they were rewritten, supplemented, translated freely, there was still fluidity and imagination then. The concept of original in today's sense was gradually formed in the 19th century with the first nuggets of copyright, the author collecting a fee, the publishing houses controlling. And it is relativized again today, in the era of the Internet and copy and paste, where too many users now have access to documents." Document on the death of Constantinos Simonides not Athenaeum". Or maybe he died 23 years later, in 1890, in some small town in Albania, as the "Times" of London wrote at the time. But wasn't the same newspaper published on February 22, 2008 with the title "Simonides strikes again"? But, to be honest, this last thing exists. Only advertisements in the press of the time. Perhaps he died at the end of September 1867 in Alexandria, where he lived the last years of his life selling manuscripts to the first "tourists", as he wrote shortly afterwards the English magazine "The publication meant that the Simonides a very expensive manuscript of the ancient geographer Artemidorus that had bought a Turin bank instead of 2.6 million euros!

The Odyssey of the forger Constantinos Simonides. Bibliography The adventurous story of the Greek who fooled Europe and at the same time invented antiquity. Rüdiger Schaper translation: Natasa Sehidou Nefeli, 2012 We are at the beginning of the 19th century, Greece is fighting for its freedom. On an island in the Aegean, Konstantinos Simonidis comes to life. Exiled to Athos due to a poisoning attempt, he learns the art of editing old manuscripts. This is where his odyssey begins: Athens, Istanbul, Paris, Leipzig, London - the mysterious Greek appears everywhere and offers works that awaken the lust of every collector. But where does its meaning come from? Are the valuable works it offers authentic? Simonides' constant companion: chaos - an international scandal, prison, a fake biography and nebulous circumstances of death. The true story of a genius forger, who

it still fascinates today. "Whenever his name appears, terror spreads among collectors and museum curators. He has made and bequeathed to us hundreds, if not thousands, of ancient artifacts, crossing the old with the new until they are unrecognizable. Simonides was an artist who created a universe of dark matter of his own, opening black holes to the world's best collections. His works resemble toxic loans on dirty bank balance sheets. They are ticking time bombs, antimatter in a world ruled by greed and science, devoted to the fetish of the authentic. With enthusiasm and the power of persuasion he possesses, in other times he would have become an investment banker, a Madoff of archeology and the art trade. His manuscripts shake scientific concepts into the air, make academies and museums tremble. He furnishes, decorates and enlivens the buried space into which his contemporaries invade with great greed and curiosity."
