Dear Mr Avery

I have been asked to reply to your recent enquiry, received yesterday, 2 September 2024, concerning a letter written by Constantine Simonides, dated 29 July 1862, held here at the National Library of Wales as Harpton Court Estate Records C/2336.

As to the length of the letter in question, its text comprises just two sides of paper approximately A5 in size. Regarding an “indication of the topic”, regrettably I am not personally versed in Greek, however a colleague of mine here at the Library who has a degree in Classical Greek has offered to look at the letter in this regard.

Although she has not had an opportunity to look at the text fully, she has informed me that it appears to mention Egyptian hieroglyphics, though she does not yet know the context, or whether there is anything specifically about the Codex Sinaiticus controversy therein.

Obviously once I am apprised of my colleague’s findings I will inform you of such, so you can decide if you would like to obtain a PDF copy of the letter concerned; the cost of which would be our £2.00 minimum charge on sending out such electronically.

If you find you do wish to obtain a copy, I can then see about creating an entry in our reprographics database for your order, and send you a requisite ‘Request for Copies’ form for you to sign and return with your remittance.

IMPORTANT: please be advised that for this I will require your full postal address and your EXPRESS permission for us to retain your personal data in line with the General Data Protection Regulation.

In regard to the latter, therefore, I would need you to please read the following statement at http://www.library.wales/services/reproduction-and-reuse/reprographic-privacy-statement/#c55442 and let me know that you are happy for us to do this; i.e. by simply sending me a sentence along the lines that you agree to this.

Accordingly, I trust the above meets with your satisfaction, and shall write to you again as soon as I hear back from my colleague. Though please note I shall be away from work tomorrow, Wednesday 4 September 2024, but should be back in the office the day after. Thank you for using the National Library of Wales’ Enquiries Service.

Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Avery

Further to my initial reply of this Tuesday, 3 September 2024, concerning a letter written by Constantine Simonides, dated 29 July 1862, held here at the National Library of Wales as Harpton Court Estate Records C/2336.

My colleague has by now been able to look at the letter, which was written to Sir George Cornewall Lewis, in more detail, and informs me that, as she suspected, it only appears to deal with Egyptian hieroglyphics and Simonides criticism of Jean-François Champollion’s approach to such.

In the circumstances, therefore, I assume you would not want a copy of the letter. However, if this is not the case, and you would like to receive a PDF of it, please let me know. In this regard I refer you to my previous response, and the requirement to have your address and permission in respect to the G.D.P.R.

In any event, I trust the above meets with your approval, and will be of some use to you nonetheless. Thank you for using the National Library of Wales’ Enquiries Service.

Yours sincerely
