The Latin New Testament (2016)
Hugh Houghton

Ambrose, Rufinus, Augustine, Quodvultdeus, and other authors.

Quodvultdeus was listed in the apparatus.

Ambrose has complex evidences, as does Augustine.

Rebaptism is about water baptism, so the heavenly witnesses are not expected.
Plus it gives hints of the full verse.

Bill Brown on BVDB got all excited that Hugh Houghton gives some textcrit perspective :)
The modern, ultra-weak idea that somebody, unknown, other than Jerome, perhaps Rufinus, translated the Epistles!
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/bib...enticity-of-1-john-5-7-t6020-s440.html#p81699

(The other stuff is typical Bill Brown nothings, weak on logic, however the issue of the compilation of the Vulgate by Jerome is fundamental. and we have some superb references and analysis ready to go!)

======================================

The basic truth: Jerome translated the entire New Testament.

Jerome, who writes accurately, affirms he revised the entire New Testament

The Hugh Houghton views are mentioned here

Vulgate Prologue - super-evidence
today the supposed reason for non-authenticity is the tentative assertion that Jerome did not translate the Epistles

https://www.purebibleforum.com/index.php?threads/vulgate-prologue-super-evidence.56/#post-924

This also offers a history of the scholarship on the authorship question.

More here:

Erasmus and the Johannine Comma (1 John 5.7-8) - Grantley McDonald
https://www.purebibleforum.com/inde...ine-comma-1-john-5-7-8-grantley-mcdonald.953/

This shows how the comments of Hugh Houghton are far more reserved and cautious than those of Grantley McDonald. Plus the John Chapman and Aloys Dirksen material is far more robust, supporting Jerome's authorship of the full NT.

=====================================

WIP

Is there really any dispute about Jerome's authorship of the Vulgate Prologue?

Bill Brown responds with his typical worthless, reactive post.
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/bib...-the-insanity-they-give-t6305-s80.html#p81706

Plus the John Chapman and Aloys Dirksen material is far more robust, supporting Jerome's authorship of the full NT.
So far all I see is you quoting other people.

When scholars write excellently and make the basic points, often the right thing to do is quote their writing. Nobody refuted their position, and we can add others, like Walter Drum.

John Chapman is here:
https://www.purebibleforum.com/inde...1-john-5-7-8-grantley-mcdonald.953/#post-2114

Dirksen and Drum
https://www.purebibleforum.com/inde...vised-the-entire-new-testament.956/#post-2120

Hugh Houghton did not offer anything substantive against the historical position that Jerome translated the full New Testament. We had a cordial discussion of the question, and that remains my summary.
