hand sanitizers - caution
Nearly 60 hand sanitizer brands are potentially toxic, FDA warns

FDA expands warning for hand sanitizers to avoid

One person noted they bought BluMen at ShopRite.
And I don’t use any of this stuff, I am a health naturalists, so I dunno what is sold where.

They know about it and will refund your money..

That does not seem sufficient for selling a toxic, poisonous product.

First, they should have large signs, explaining, at least in the sanitizer area.

Second, they should use their membership information to contact those who are using the toxic products, they probably can get the majority of the stuff not yet used back in house and dumped. Plus the users of the toxic products can be warned, they may get sick .. they may even think they have the dreaded covid.
From above, it is far more than getting a refund. (And checking what is on the shelf now.)

"The lengthy list of potentially dangerous sanitizers include brands sold at Walmart-owned Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club .... The FDA urged consumers to stop using the methanol products, which should be immediately discarded in hazardous waste containers."

"Also try to avoid products with ingredients endings of “ol” or “ene,” which Nelson says are likely an indication of potentially harmful petroleum-based ingredients. Lastly, some of the most popular products have antibacterial ingredients that are pesticides such as methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone, which are known skin irritants and are considered neurotoxic. "
Please be careful.

Hand sanitizers are always questionable, and many are toxic, even potentially deadly, per CNN.

FDA expands list of potentially deadly hand sanitizers

The blasé response to these dangers does astound me.
“A warning letter has been issued to Eskbiochem S.A. de C.V. for distributing product with undeclared methanol, unapproved claims --including incorrectly stating FDA approval—and improper manufacturing practices," the agency added.”

Notice that your bottle may not list the most dangerous methanol ingredients and may say, falsely, FDA-approved.

FDA Warns of Hazardous Hand Sanitizers

According to the FDA, methanol, or wood alcohol, is not an acceptable ingredient in hand sanitizers. Exposure to methanol can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system, or death. Children who use hand sanitizers with methanol and accidentally ingest it are at a risk for methanol poisoning, as are adults who drink the sanitizer as a substitute for alcohol.

======

Anyone who has been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol should seek immediate medical treatment. The FDA recommends placing the hand sanitizer in a hazardous waste container, if available, or disposing of it as recommended by local waste management and recycling centers. Do not flush or pour these products down the drain or mix them with other liquids.

For awhile this thread did not seem to be giving notifications and up-popping. Think it may be better now, although I can only tell by using a friend’s sign on.

FDA List

How to figure out if your hand sanitizer is the toxic kind on the FDA’s recall list
https://www.wthr.com/article/news/i...er-is-the-toxic-kind-on-the-fdas-recall-list/

“More and more are being discovered each day as we continue our testing,” FDA spokesman Jeremy Kahn told 13News. “It’s hard because you can’t see it and you really can’t smell it. The methanol is not declared on the label.”

...

Of the 87 hand sanitizers now recalled by the FDA for containing methanol, 86 of them were produced in Mexico.

So how can you tell which hand sanitizer is safe and which is toxic?

Start by looking at the label to determine where the hand sanitizer was made. Of the 87 hand sanitizers now recalled by the FDA for containing methanol, 86 of them were produced in Mexico. (The other one was produced by a distillery in Tennessee and states on the label that it contains methanol.)

That is not to say ALL hand sanitizers made in Mexico should be avoided. A popular brand of hand sanitizer now available at Home Depot and Walmart is not on the FDA’s list of recalled products. But the FDA says customers who have hand sanitizer made in Mexico should research their product further.

“If you look at the list of recalled products, almost all of them are from Mexico, so if yours is made there, that’s an immediate trigger and alert,” Kahn said. “At that point, you need to look at the specifics on the bottle.”

The FDA suggests consumers who are concerned about their hand sanitizer look for three important identifiers: the product’s name, its manufacturer and its national drug code number. All should be listed on the label. That information can then be cross referenced with the FDA’s list of recalled hand sanitizers to determine if a product has been recalled due to methanol.

If any of the identifiers match, the FDA says consumers should get rid of the hand sanitizer immediately (at a hazardous waste site, not down the drain).

Methanol can cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, blurred vision and blindness, seizures, coma or death. The FDA told 13News the eight deaths recorded so far have all resulted from individuals drinking the hand sanitizer. The fatalities include both children who accidentally drank the liquid and adults who intentionally ingested it, according to Kahn.

Medical journals suggest methanol can also cause significant health problems when applied to the skin or if its fumes are inhaled.

Mounting poisonings, blindness, deaths as toxic hand sanitizers flood market
Beth Mole - July 28

"The agency reported that its ongoing testing has found sanitizers containing methanol at levels ranging from 1 percent to 80 percent. No amount of methanol is acceptable, the agency notes. The alcohol, which is metabolized to formaldehyde then to formic acid in the body, can cause systemic toxic effects if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Ingesting just two tablespoons can be fatal to small children, who may be tempted to drink sanitizers within reach. Smaller amounts can lead to permanent blindness.
