James William Sheffield

1 John 5:7 (Johannine Comma) - "These Three Are One"

Using the Thomas Holland article is problematic, there is so much that has been improved in heavenly witnesses exposition since that time.
Eric Rowe makes the silly argument, taken care of long ago by Eugenius Bulgaris, that the masculine heavenly witnesses does not effect the earthly witnesses grammar.

Bill Brown agrees, from his ultra-weak thesis. Bill makes many dumb arguments in the thread, most of which are not worth any notice.
James William Sheffield goes into Jerome's Vulgate Prologue:

However, there is much better material on it that Jesse Boyd.
Reasonable back and forth on Gregory Nazianzus.
Here on the Council of Carthage, from James Sheffield, I would like to see the Revelation reference. Not super-important, but a nice note to have in the discussion. (I have not searched for it yet.)

And Eric Rowe's comment is super-dumb, since it was a wide-ranging Mediteranean region. James Snapp actually wrote on this Council quite skillfully on the contra forum.

James William Sheffield on the Council of Carthage

Remember this passage was quoted in the presence of 461 trinitarian and arians bishops, and none of them objected to the passage. Also, the vulgate was already in circulation in North Africa by 405 according to augustine letter to jerome. North africa was no slouch, because 65 years earlier they responded against Pope Boniface attack on revelation defending the text.

Eric Rowe B...That Council of Carthage was a local council. It didn't speak for any churches of that time other than those of a fairly limited region.
Ok, James Sheffield caughat that one.

Jonathan Sheffield Eric Rowe I love how you call it a local council with 461 bishops...Nicea only had around 300...the north African churches were one of the largest apostolic sees in the west - it wasn't a PTA meeting. Eugenius was the spoke person for the bishops of africa, Mauritania, sardinia, corsica and the balearick isles. Some local council. Lol

Eric follows with another dumb quote, an argument that has been given by James Snapp as well. (there is so much silliness that i have to pass over, for time and interest limitations.) Here he conjectures that Cyprian emended the text, adding the heavenly witnesses:

Eric Rowe
That Council of Carthage was a local council. It didn't speak for any churches of that time other than those of a fairly limited region. But one good possibility is Cyprian.

Just a reminder that Franz Pieper has a wonderful section on the Cyprian reference.

And that it is much easier for a text to drop from a text-line or language-line than to take it over as an addition.
