new Testament with the message of St. Apostle Barnabas and the book of Hermas, Archimandrite Porphyry of the Uspensky.” I hastened to purchase it, hoping to take advantage of the research of O. Archimandrite, who lived for quite a long time in the East, known for his journey to Sinai, and who was the first to point out this codex and partially describe it;

but I was struck with surprise and deeply grieved when I saw that the work of O. Archimandrite is nothing more than the most caustic article, aimed primarily at the personality of G. Tischendorf and does not stand up to the slightest scientific criticism, and which should never have come out of from the pen of a husband invested with clergy. It is with extreme regret that I take up the pen; but I consider it my duty; for my goal is not to analyze the personalities of O. Archimandrite and G. Tischendorf, but to protect the sacred monument, plucked from the flames of Omar, kept for so many centuries on Mount Sinai, which was in the hands of the Holy Fathers and hermits, who left on it traces of their reading, and now reproached, subject to excommunication from the Church, for the sole reason, as is clear from the writings of O. Archimandrite, that G. Tischendorf did not recognize him first, who discovered him in the Sinai monastery. This is a reproach from a person invested with sacred dignity, who says that his opinion “is the fruit of free biblical criticism, and the first fruit “on the basis of our theological literature,” and that “no one, having read it, will say later that The Russian clergy has no understanding of the Bible, no seed of its own for sowing, no threshing machine for separating the chaff from the wheat. This reproach, I say, can make a deep impression on those who are unfamiliar with the Greek language.
