When Simonides died of leprosy, Sir Thomas got the news from Prince Demeterios Rhodocanskis, who sought to allay his correspondent's grief with assurances that the suspect Homer was genuine. Since Rhodocanakis, though an imposter as Sir Thomas was as much in the dark, as ever.

This site is dedicated to Demetrios Rhodocanakis (1840-1902) who called himself "Demetrios II. Dukas Angelos Komnenos Palaiologos Rhodokanakis, fifteenth titular emperor of Constantinople".
He spent his life primarily in trying to make this plausible.

Dimitri Petrocochino
The "prince" had delusions of grandeur, and was a victim of the notorious 19th century forger Constantine Simonides (anyone interested may google the name). When he published his opus Giustinianae all the Chiot old families where aghast, including Phillip Argenti. I have a letter from a Ritter von Galatis in Vienna, saying that he checked the portraits the "prince" included in his opus as ancetors, and they are not.

Hello! Thank you for your message. This is an interesting point of view. I do not see Rhodocanakis in the role of a victim. I think Simonides was his accomplice who helped him in constructing his personal history. I looked for Ritter von Galatis but I found a lot of them. Do you have more details for me? Maybe we can talk further more on Messenger. Greetings from Vienna, Regina.

This is followed by »The Painter« (»O Greek) by Gregorios Palaiologos and another romantic-erotic epistolary novel, »Megaklis« (1840) by Georgios Rodokanakis, which as usual ends with the suicide of the hero in love168. 168 Also Apostolos Sachinis, (Greek) 1760-1860, Athens 1992, 95 ff., with further examples and analyses.
