Further, in the Ausserordentliche Beilage to the Allgemeine Zetiung, 1st October, 1861, under the head, ‘Die orientalische Section der deutschen Philologen und Schulmänner,’ Frankfurt a. M., 26ih Sept., it is stated that they give up the idea of having a paper from Professor Tischendorf on the Sinaitic MS., and of seeing the MS. by inspection, owing to an attack of fever (announced by telegraph) under which the learned and fortunate Palaeographist (der gelehrte und glückliche Paläograph) is suffering.1

Frankfurt a. M., 26 Sept.

The oriental section of German philologists and schoolmen. Frankfurt a. M., September 26th. The Orientalist section was once again a well-organized one. From all areas of Germany and also from abroad, e.g. B. from Paris, London, Krakow, researchers from the Orient came to promote oriental studies. According to the report of the Secretary of the German Oriental Society, everything in the external conditions of this society has remained unchanged throughout. It has not been possible to attract a larger number of German governments than the previous one to their interests. The society currently has 10 honorary members, 30 corresponding and 333 regular members. Your book collection contains 2373 numbers; the number of manuscripts and the like has risen to 288. As mentioned, a celebratory greeting to the congregation was received from Austria, consisting of a sample of the Kalmulian fairy tales of Siddhi kür (editor Profeffor B. Jülg in Krakow). Among the new writings available for viewing on the office table, "The Life and Teachings of Mohammed, edited by Aloys Sprenger" (first volume, Berlin) from previously largely unused sources is particularly noteworthy. Volume, Berlin). It is a remarkable work that presents a wealth of historical material in a lively manner. We therefore intend to return to it soon in these pages. The number of lectures given was limited. Professor Fleischer, from Leipzig, spoke about Sufic mysticism, which was an interesting lecture. Württemberg theologian Trumpp, a missionary from East India (who is currently working on important grammatical elaborations concerning almost completely unknown new Indian languages such as Sindhi), followed up on comments from his personal encounters with Persian Sufis. Stähelin, from Basel, gave linguistic information about Psalms of the second book. Fredslob, from Hamburg, communicated an interpretation of the seal of the Templars, and Professor Oppert, from Paris, gave hints about a cuneiform inscription he deciphered, which refers to the Assyrian King Sancherib, which is not without historical significance. Unfortunately, Professor Tischendorf's planned lecture in Leipzig about the Sinaitic manuscript of the New Testament he had discovered and the planned autopsy of the same had to be canceled because the learned and happy paleographer was unable to make the trip, because of an attack of fever, which was reported by telegraph, he was unable to travel.'. Professor Haßler from Ulm, who was present, was also prevented from giving a promised lecture for other reasons. Attempts will be made to win Prof. M. J. Müller as president for the meeting next year (inshallah!) in Augsburg. W.

Dr. Tregclles, in his preface, has some remarks upon Palimp-
sest MSS.; and we may observe, in addition, that a palimpsest
has an evidence which seems to be peculiarly its own. We are
carried vividly back to the time when parchment was dear, and
books were scarce. The genuineness of such a document can
hardly be questioned. That a manuscript of the Greek Testa-
ment should be first rubbed out, then cut up into new leaves,
then superscribed, merely for the chance of the original writing
being restored by chemical process, or deciphered by a pair of very
patient eyes, is an hypothesis too absurd to be maintained for a
moment. We might challenge even Simonides himself to manu-
facture such a document as the Codex Zacynthius, existing, as it
docs, under such complicated conditions.

As I have pointed out, Tischendorf wanted very little examination of the manuscript, especially the two sections together. This time, in 1861, was the time when most everything was in Leipzig.

German Oriental Society ... Unfortunately, Professor Tischendorf's planned lecture in Leipzig about the Sinaitic manuscript of the New Testament he had discovered and the planned inspection of the same had to be canceled because the learned and fortunate paleographer, because of an attack of fever, which was reported by telegraph, he was unable to make the journey.

So far, this seems to have been the only planned objective palaeographic examination. Much later we had the canceled 2015 Leipzig tests planned by BAM. Note that this would have included the New Testament pages, which were in Germany in 1861 to help with the book production. However, those pages, due to the mixed colouring and staining, were very problematic if real scientific observation was allowed.

The inspectors might notice right away that the condition of the pages were very unusual, even questionable. And this would be remembered when the Simonides and Kallinikos account of Sinai tampering came forth. Also in Leipzig it would be very hard to avoid the two sections compared, 1844 CFA and 1859 St. Petersburg, which would be a huge red flag. It is even possible that, much like Tischendorf was worried about Simonides in his travels to the monastery in 1859, the grapevine was abuzz with the tampering accusation news, even before the first publication in 1862..

Yes, it is surely possible that there was an incapacitating attack of fever, and otherwise Tischendorf would have been at the meeting of the German Oriental Society.

It is also possible that it dawned on Tischendorf that this inspection might not go well!
