Soon afterwards, his half-brother and main heir Stilpon dies and leaves a fortune in Egypt; Simonides hopes for a share in the inheritance, but comes away empty-handed. He makes his two half-brothers an offer to pass on his skull to them - after all, England offered 3,000 pounds for his head; The brothers then answer why he did not sell it himself, to which he replies: “to leave it to you!” (Chatzifotis, No. 41, Estia, November 18, 1976 and Calliga 1986, 249).
