Rüdiger Schaper: Simonides is not that tangible either. But he leaves more room for reflection. In my opinion, the decisive factor was to play a role in this huge business, in this huge market, for adventurers, scholars and museums. An active role for someone from the people, who were rather passive. I don’t think that should be underestimated and that’s how I explained it to myself: that Simonides, in the then young capital of Athens, which was ruled by a Bavarian king and Bavarian administrators, had to do something about it, to play a part and profit, and not just watch everyone march through. I can’t prove that. I also didn’t write an academic piece and I took liberties, as is usual in journalism. But there are also reports from the time, for example the famous book by Fallmerayer,3 where you can sense this atmosphere.

We do not mean Fallmerayer's review, which discovered in Tischendorf's "Reise in den Orient" a "true abyss of thoughtlessness, marklessness, nothingness and distraction" and saw in the author a "decorated wandering hero", "whom, as it were, straight from the school bench, the most polished states of Europe hang in a bet with their Nishan Iftichar." We also ignore certain people's opinions about the later travel writings of the person concerned, Opinions that expressed similar things, if not in such an impolite form as the Fragmentist. Just as little do we intend to let the voice of a very respectable scholar speak in detail for now, which expressed some time ago in the "Petersburger Zeitung" that the credit Tischendorf claimed for having discovered the Sinaitic manuscript was due to other travelers. Finally, we also want to leave unmentioned those opponents of our great man for the time being who heard the dark rumor from the Orient has penetrated that the manuscript in question was won over to the Russian government in a substantially different way than Tischendorf reports in anointed words in his latest travel book Aus dem Heiligen Land (accidentally intended more for the Petersburg court than for a German public). What we mean is the attack on the authenticity of that Sinaitic Bible record recently launched by the Greek Simonides, and the voices of doubt which have consequently been raised in the English press. The former is the above-mentioned bitter enemy of our Tischendorf, these are the respectable opponents.
