Have you had the opportunity to work with fragments and manuscripts at St. Catherine’s?

Interesting questions, including about the famous Codex Sinaiticus!
And the amazing condition of the manuscript.

Also I am trying to find out if much work is done on dating fragments from the New Finds?
The books seem to be simpler than the fragments.

(There are also excellent projects trying to document what was removed, often leading to manuscripts split between Sinai and Eutope.. Lepzig, St. Petersburg, etc.)

Nikolopoulos and the first scholars who studied the New Finds, faced the huge task of cataloguing and identifying numerous newly discovered manuscripts and fragments.[ix] Although they did an admirable job under difficult circumstances in Sinai, more work is needed by the new generation of scholars in order to fully explore the manuscript treasure of Saint Catherine’s Monastery.

When we see the amazing flexibility of the parchment, should we start questioning whether it is really 1,650 years old?

Perhaps it is time to revisit Benedict, Simonides and Mt. Athos?

der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft ermöglicht“ (1,8). - Ein früher, bei der bespr.
Ausgabe bekannter (1,19), doch nicht beigezogener Codex Sinaiticus, teils auf Papier, teils
auf Pergamentblättern geschrieben und gemischten Inhalts, beinhaltet dieselbe slav. Pan-
dektai-Version. Aus diesem Sinait slav. 34 gelangten Palimpseste durch Konstantin von
Tischendorf nach Sankt-Petersburg: RNB gr. 70 (fol 54-98 jetzt ediert durch Afa-
nas’eva - Levshina), Q. p. I. 63 und Q. p. I. 64; eine ganze Lage des Muttercodex wurde
unter den sog. Neuen Funden 1975 auf dem Sinai wiederentdeckt: Sinait slav. 18/N, so
dass jetzt Kap. 29 bis 40 der Pandektai zur Verfügung stehen, außerdem weitere zum
selben Codex gehörende slav. Texte. Das Manuskript selbst, paläographisch für die Ober-
schrift spätestens Mitte des 13. Jh. zu datieren, ist liturgiegeschichtlich doppelt interessant-



42r: die drei Liturgien und die Wasserweihe an Epiphanie, zum Druck gelangen. Veröffent-
licht wird ferner ein der Ausgabe vorangestellter Vergleich von liturgischen Ordines des
Sinaiticus mit den Paralleltexten des ihm nahestehenden Vat. Barb. gr. 336 und des moder-
nen griech. EO^oXoytov ro Mey« sowie mit knappen Analysen weiterer Feiern, nicht
aber die im Original enthaltene Übersetzung der arabischen, Nutzung im Vorderen Orient
beweisenden Randbemerkungen der Handschrift. Als auffällige Besonderheit hatte Arranz,
im Gefolge Dmitrievsldjs, „une grande quanrite de prieres qui ne se retrouvent pas dans les
autres mss de l’Euchologe patriarcal ni dans Goar“ herausgestellt (OCP 48. 1982, 305).
Darüber findet sich hier nichts Erhellendes. Auch andere Fragen, so nach Herkunft, Zweck
und Benutzung vorliegenden Manuskripts sowie möglichen nichtkonstantinopolitan. Quel-
len seiner Euchologie, bleiben ungestellt und ungelöst Falsch ist die Angabe, die Karfrei-
tagskatechese mit Apotaxis und Syntaxis der Täuflinge werde nach diesem Manuskript
gefeiert „dell’arcivescovo ... e non dal patriarca* (68). Wie schon Dmitrievskij hervorhob,
ist der Patriarch in den Rubriken des Sinaiticus ausdrücklich erwähnt
