Staying at St. Catherine's Monastery from June to August 1850, Porphyrius compiled a catalogue of Greek manuscripts from the monastery library at the request of the community. That was the first science-based catalogue of the oldest and richest library collections of the Orthodox East. All members of the Mission actively participated in creating the catalogue under the direction of their head, who engaged them in his research work. Only 60 years later this catalogue was published by another prominent specialist in Byzantine V.N. Beneshevich. Meanwhile, the age-old catalogue, made by Archimandrite Porphyrius, have retained its scientific value today.

Exactly what was said about Sinaiticus in this catalog? Is the only mention of this in the Russian literature? Is the catalog in Russian or Greek?

"At that time St. Catherine's on Mt Sinai was twice (in 1845 and 1850) visited by Bishop Porphyrius (Constantin Alexandrovich Uspensky, 1804-1885), the head of the first Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. In his account of the first visit in 1845, Porphyrius described the most important manuscripts in St Catherine's Monastery Library. His description of the Codex Sinaiticus covers the 86 sheets that Tischendorf found and left behind, and 260 more sheets of the same manuscript.

At the turn of the 20th century the Imperial Academy of Sciences decided to publish the catalogue of Greek manuscripts from St Catherine's Monastery on Mt Sinai. The immense catalogue was started but not completed by Bishop Porphyrius (Uspensky). Beneshevich was commissioned to complete and edit it. For this purpose V.N. Beneshevich made three visits to Mt Sinai: in 1907, 1908 and 1911. The first volume of the catalogue was issued in 1911. It contained, in addition to description of the manuscripts in St Catherine's Monastery, a list of manuscripts from Sinai held by our Library and other European institutions, including single codices and fragments. Each fragment was properly assigned to its original Sinai manuscripts. 68 manuscripts from Sinai were possessed only by our Library. The task demanded that the editor had an infallible photographic memory besides single-handed photographs.

In 1930s, V.N. Beneshevich was actually the sole paleographer - Hellenist. But he did not let this profession die. His pupil, Evgenya Eduardovna Granstrem, not only continued his life's work but also established a research school.

V.N. Beneshevich, as an expert in Byzantine canon law and experienced paleographer, took photographs of a great number of manuscripts, mostly containing texts on canon law of unique importance to the history of the national science[SUP]7[/SUP]. He also published the catalogue of Greek manuscripts in St Catherine's Monastery on Mt Sinai, based on materials of Bishop Porphyrius (Uspensky)[SUP]8[/SUP]. Thanks to this catalogue, researchers became aware of the existence of another sheet of Codex Sinaiticus in the collection of the Society of Lovers of Ancient Literature.

The Archive of the Society preserves documents containing correspondence on the subject of copying fragment in order to reproduced it in the second volume of a facsimile of the Codex Sinaiticus prepared by Professor Kirsopp Lake. The first request was made in 1914 through President of Harvard University Abbott Lawrence Lowell, with the aid of Councilor of the American Embassy Charles S. Wilson. This negotiations took place in several stages because it was actually difficult to make a copy of a parchment sheet bearing hardly visible text. The delay was caused by the desire of the photographer Karl Bulla to obtain the most satisfactory results in his photographs. Photocopies were sent on 7 September 1916[SUP]9[/SUP]. And on 25 October 1916, the Society of Lovers of Ancient Literature received a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressing sincere appreciation for the photographs required to Professor Lake.

Thus, the leaf from the collection of the Society of Lovers of Ancient Literature proved to be of particular significance to the completeness of the content of the publication of the Codex Sinaiticus. The second volume, which included the reproduction of a fragment from the collection of the Society, was released in 1922.[SUP]10
