They had not yet developed their wacky theories that this tiny "viruses" (inactive or dead) somehow have the innate intelligence to hijack cellular functions for reproduction.
This became "science" around the 1950s, without a single experimental proof. Which should have been a landmark discovery and reproducible. However, there was no such actual demonstration, evidence, or proof.
It would be interesting to study the literature and get the exact quotes where this began to be considered "science".
