Hermann Van Flekwyk (died June 10, 1569) was a Dutch Anabaptist, whose name has become memorable, in consequence of an examination for heresy conducted by the Franciscan Cornelius Adrians later translated.


" Inq. You are an impertinent fellow, to fancy that God pours out his spirit upon you, who do not believe that the Holy Spirit is God! You have borrowed those heretical opinions from the diabolical books of the cursed Erasmus of Rotterdam, who, in his Preface to the Works of St. Hilary, pretends that this holy man says, at the end of his twelfth Book, that the Holy Spirit is not called God in any part of the Scripture ; and that we are so bold as to call him so, though the Fathers of the Church scrupled to give him that name. Will you be a follower of that Antitrinitarian ?"

" Inq. You have sucked the poisoned breast of Erasmus. * Appendix, No. i.

"Inq. These are the wretched arguments of the cursed Erasmus, in his small treatise 'On Prayer,' and in his 'Apology to the Bishop of Seville.' If you are contented to call Christ 'the Son of God,' you do not give him a more eminent title, than that which St. Luke gives to Adam, whom he calls also 'the son of God.'"

Here Grantley gives his interpretation of the "Christ as God" verses, likely not Adrians, who is unlikely to limit it to Romans 9:5. (John 20:28, Titus 2:13, and more).


Rom 9:5 ... The former interpretation would constitute the sole instance in which Paul described Christ as God, but it is by no means clear that this is the correct interpretation.

Check .. what did Erasmus say?

That is Grantley's limitation. Those who are defending the deity could include 1 Timothy 3:16 and Titus 2:13 and 2 Peter 1:1, Acts 20:28 (Paul speaking), Colossians 1:15, 1:19, 2:9, Philippians 2:6-11.

Grantley weighs in on authenticity, it looks like he has the later date for Adrians biography.

" It is a moot question whether the Historie en Sermoonen van Broeder Cornelis Adriaensz (Part I printed in 1569, second part 1578; there were several reprints) is genuine. S. Cramer thought it was not (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1899, 94 f., 145; 1900, 191). R. Fruin (Verspreide geschriften . . . The Hague, 1900, 387) took the opposite view, as after him Kühler did also.

If Adrians wrote this in 1569 or 1578, what would be fiction, and what would be fact? How about the actual execution result?
Overall, I tend to doubt that he created the dialog. If his biography was 1607, the fiction idea is more likely.

While this site, while saying the above, tries to say that Flekwyk affirmed the Deity of Christ, which is a bit of a stretch.

In the disputation between Herman and Broer Cornelis, the friar accused Herman of anti-Trinitarianism. Hans Alenson related that Herman was a follower of Adam Pastor and a unitarian (BRN VII, 196). The matter is not quite clear.
