Just a note on Nolan above, that several references to Cyril of Alexandria reading "God was manifest" are now known. In the early days of the controversy, there was a scholia of Cyril reproduced in the commentary of Oecumenius that began with OC (which really only means it was taking from a relative clause, if we don't look at it from the lens of variant readings) and this became well known due to the popularity of Wettstein, Griesbach, Tischendorf, et al, but the others were not as widely known or discussed. Of all passages, I think 1 Timothy 3:16 was one of the ones treated most carelessly. Some of the errors still haven't been cleared to this day.
